Comunities In Schools
Communities in Schools (CIS) is a Non-Profit, United Way, agency that connects public, private, and volunteer sectors of the community to High Point Central on behalf of the students and families. The mission of CIS is: “to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.”
CIS helps students achieve in life by implementing programs like 21st Century Scholars. The 21st Century Scholars Program is the college access and career exploration component of CIS. Another component of Communities In Schools is partnering with Human service providers, volunteers, business owners, school staff, and counselors through a collaborative effort striving to help children successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life. The 21st Century Scholars program offers various enriching experiences such as mentors, guest speakers, college visits, field trips, job shadowing, financial aid information and competitive last dollar scholarships upon completion of high school and the requirements of the 21st Century Scholars program.
Ms. Jamena Pegues is the CIS coordinator for our school. If you have further questions about the program or if you would like for your child to join please feel free to email Ms. Pegues at pegeusj3@gcsnc.com or Mr. Alex Stafford at staffoa@gcsnc.com. PLEASE NOTE: A referral does not automatically guarantee CIS enrollment.
School Resource Officers
The High Point Police Department and the Guilford County School System are committed to providing a safe learning environment. At High Point Central we strive to develop specific goals and high academic standards using communication and commitment within a shared learning environment.
We would also like to direct out attention towards teenage drug use and property thefts. While at the school we would like to work together with the community towards a common vision of generating enthusiasm and responsibility among students, empowering them with the knowledge of the harmful effects drug use may cause and having a high expectation and positive attitude towards their future.
With the High Point Police Department, Guilford County School System, and the community working together towards a common goal, it will show our students there is no limit to what can be accomplished if we work together.
Please feel free to contact Officer Byrom or Officer Vetell if you have any questions or concerns.
Exceptional Children
The Exceptional Children’s Department at High Point Central High School is responsible for serving our students with disabilities. The EC teacher is responsible for following the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) by supporting the goals and services as stated in the document. Our Department consists of the Occupational Course of Study, the Life Skills Adapted Program and our Inclusion Services provided to students in regular education classrooms.
The Exceptional Children’s Department advocates for our students by providing modifications and accommodations for classroom assignments and standardized testing. We strive to be a liaison between our parents, students, and school. Case managers will be contacting parents throughout the year to schedule IEP meetings.
Please contact the EC Administrator, Mr. Hagerman, or our EC Department Chair, at 336-819-2825 if you have any questions or concerns.
Visit the GCS Exceptional Children Department Page and the NC Department of Public Instruction for additonal information and resources.

English Language Learners (EL)
The English Learner (EL) program in Guilford County Schools aims to support emergent multilingual speakers in their educational journeys.
Students within the EL program may receive English language development classes, coteaching inclusion classes, and/or accommodations on state testing. Every student who qualifies for EL support is evaluated annually on the WIDA ACCESS test, which measures a student's reading, writing, listening and speaking skills of academic English language.
Our county uses a research-driven approach to facilitating academic language acquisition. The framework, which embeds language learning within a text, is called 3Ls: Language, Learning & Literacy.
EL students may take a range of courses, depending on their academic English language proficiency. These classes include Expanding Communications, Developing Communications in the Content Areas, 3Ls Approach to Literature, 3Ls Approach to World Studies, and 3Ls Approach to Science.
By partnering with students and their families, we hope to provide a high-quality educational experience that posits our students for success beyond the classroom.
